The PittNet VPN (Pulse Secure) service is available to all students, faculty, staff, and sponsored accounts to securely access unrestricted and restricted resources. The service encrypts traffic and makes it look as if the user's computer is on the University's network. Students, faculty, staff, and sponsored accounts can download the Pulse. In the Search for the Pulse Secure Application Launcher window, click Download. INSTALLING THE PULSE SECURE VPN CLIENT ON A MAC

Temporarily change your security preferences.
Before you can install the Pulse Secure client, you must temporarily change your Security preferences:

  1. Click the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences, then Security & Privacy.
  2. Click the padlock icon and enter your computer password.
    Note: If you are using a Smith-owned Mac that is bound to AD, enter your network password.
  3. On the General tab, change the Allow apps downloaded from: setting to App Store and identified developers.
  4. Leave the Security & Privacy window open for now.

Download the Pulse Secure Client.

Client
  1. Download the Pulse Secure Client for Mac from the Smith Software site. Scroll down to the Misc. section.
  2. Double-click the pluse_v5.......pkg to start the install.
  3. Accept the defaults and if prompted, enter for your username and password to install new software.
  4. Restart your computer.

Configure a Connection to Smith

  1. Open Pulse Secure. A Pulse Secure icon (a fancy S for Secure) will appear in the top menu bar.
  2. From the Connection Bar, click the plus-sign to add a connection.
  3. The Type of Connection should read: Policy Secure (UAC) or Connect Secure (VPN)

  4. In the Name field, enter a name for your Profile (for example, Smith).
  5. In the Server URL field, enter vpn.smith.edu
  6. Click Add to save the profile.
  7. Click connect and login with your Smith username and password (do not include the @smith.edu to the username)
  8. You will be prompted to input a Secondary Password. This is to indicate the authentication method you want Duo to use. For a push to the Duo App enter Push, to have Duo call you enter Phone. For more information on this step please follow these instructions.

You are now using the Pulse Secure for a secure connection back to Smith.

Restore your Security preferences.

Return to the Security & Privacy window you modified in Part 1 to restore your previous settings:

  1. Change the Allow apps downloaded from: setting to Mac App Store and identified developers.
  2. Click the padlock icon to save your changes and prevent further changes.

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN (wikipedia), can be established by using the Pulse Secure client program to connect to Engineering resources from outside the Engineering network. Once the VPN connection is established, users can access resources such as software licenses or network drives (M:, O: or R: drives).

Instructions for using Pulse Secure are below.

Requirements

  1. Windows 8 and above or OSX 10.11 and above
  2. You must be faculty or staff. If you are not, please contact support@egr.msu.edu with your needs.
  3. Active EGR NetID
  4. Internet connection

First Time Setup on Windows

This section is only applicable if you have never installed the Pulse Secure program on your Windows computer.

  1. Navigate to https://vpn.egr.msu.edu
  2. Enter your engineering username and password
  3. Click the Start button to launch the auto-installer
  4. Wait a moment for the Searching prompt and click Download when asked
  5. If you are using Chrome, please click the downloaded installer at the bottom left:
  6. If you are using Firefox, please click Save File, click the arrow in upper right, then click the downloaded installer:
  7. If you see a security warning, click OK:
  8. Click 'HERE' to continue the install process:
  9. Once completed, your computer will be connected to the VPN, and will have access to designated engineering resources.

Mac Update Pulse Secure

Typically in the lower right hand corner of the screen, you will see the Pulse Secure icon in the system tray (you may need to click to expand the system tray to reveal the icon). If you see this icon in bright color, you are connected to the DECS VPN. It can also be used to reconnect to the VPN later instead of going through the VPN webpage.

First Time Setup on Macintosh OSX

This section is only applicable if you have never installed the Pulse Secure program on your Mac.

  1. Navigate to https://vpn.egr.msu.edu
  2. Enter your engineering username and password
  3. Click Pulse Secure Client Installers under Web Bookmarks
  4. Click the Apple OS X Pulse Installer link to download it
  5. Open the PulseSecure.dmg file and install the application by launching PulseSecure.pkg
  6. If you receive a message prompt ' 'PulseSecure.pkg' can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software', please see this workaround: https://kb.pulsesecure.net/articles/Pulse_Secure_Article/KB44321
  7. Once installed, the application should automatically launch. If not, you should be able to open the Application by searching Pulse in the Finder (magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner)
  8. The first time the application is launched you will need to setup a connection. In the Connections Window click the + sign in the lower left
  9. Leave the connection Type set to 'Policy Secure (UAC) or Connect Secure (VPN)', for Name enter EGR VPN, and for Server URL enter: vpn.egr.msu.edu
  10. Once that information is entered you should be able to click Connect on the saved connection and launch the VPN client. You will have to enter your EGR NetID and password and click Connect, at this point the client should indicate you are connected to VPN.

Re-Connecting to the VPN After You Have Successfully Installed the Pulse Secure Client

Once you have completed the above steps for either Windows or Mac, you will not have to visit the VPN website any longer with that particular computer to initiate a VPN connection. You simply need to launch Pulse Secure, connect using the EGR profile, and provide your EGR NetID and password.

In Mac, click the Finder in the upper right corner and search Pulse Secure to reveal the Pulse Secure client, which can then simply be launched.

In Windows, either click the Start button, type Pulse Secure , and launch Pulse Secure from the results, or click Start and browse through All Programs or Program Files (depending on your version of Windows), find the Juniper Networks Folder, then the Pulse Secure folder and launch the Pulse Secure client.

Accessing Your Network Drives and Files without Launching the VPN Client

Once you have signed into https://vpn.egr.msu.edu, you can access your files stored on your M: drive or other network drives by clicking Windows Files as pictured below.

The following screen will load providing you the option of viewing your M: drive, or of browsing to another network file location:
